Wedding Invitation and RSVP Wording

Invitation wording feels high-stakes because it is permanent, public, and read by every generation of your family at once. The structure, though, is a solved problem: five lines of information wrapped in a tone of your choosing. Below are templates for every common situation, ready to adapt.

The Five Elements Every Invitation Needs

  1. The host line (who is inviting)
  2. The request line (the actual invitation sentence)
  3. The names of the couple
  4. Date, time, and venue
  5. What follows: reception details and dress code if needed

Everything else is style.

Host Line Variations

Couple hosting: Together with their families, Maya Chen and Daniel Osei request the pleasure of your company...

One set of parents hosting: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Osei request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of their son Daniel...

Both families hosting: The families of Maya Chen and Daniel Osei invite you to celebrate...

Honoring a deceased parent: Maya, daughter of Susan Chen and the late David Chen...

Tone Templates

Classic formal

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Osei request the honour of your presence at the marriage of their son Daniel Kwame to Maya Lin Chen, Saturday, the twentieth of June, at four o'clock, St. Andrew's Chapel, followed by dinner and dancing.

Note: "the honour of your presence" traditionally signals a ceremony in a place of worship; "the pleasure of your company" signals a secular venue.

Modern warm

Maya and Daniel are getting married, and it would not be the same without you. Join us on Saturday, June 20 at 4 pm, Hazelwood Farm, Vermont. Dinner, dancing, and considerable celebration to follow.

Short and confident

Maya Chen and Daniel Osei. June 20, 2026. 4 pm. Hazelwood Farm. Come celebrate with us.

RSVP Card Wording That Gets Answers

A high-response RSVP card has four features: a deadline, a name line, a clear accept and decline choice, and meal or dietary lines when relevant.

Kindly reply by May 1 Name(s): ______________________ __ Joyfully accepts __ Regretfully declines __ Chicken __ Fish __ Vegetarian Dietary notes: ______________________

Two details that measurably improve response rates: put the deadline in bold, and write the guests' names on the card yourself before sending, which removes ambiguity about exactly who is invited. For online RSVPs, print the link and a QR code; a guest list tool like Vernans lets you log every reply, chase the silent ones, and see meal counts totalled automatically as answers arrive.

The Delicate Wordings

Adults only: We respectfully request no children under 12 at the ceremony and reception. Or, softer: To allow all our guests a night off, this will be an adults-only celebration.

No plus-ones (address it by addressing precisely): The envelope and RSVP name line do this work. "Ms. Priya Nair" invites one person; "Ms. Priya Nair and Guest" invites two. Never write "no plus-ones" on the invitation itself.

Dress code: Black tie. Cocktail attire. Garden party attire: think linen and low heels. One line, no essay.

Registry: Never on the invitation. It belongs on the wedding website, which you list on a details card.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should invitations go out?

Six to eight weeks before the wedding, with the RSVP deadline three to four weeks before the date, giving caterers and the seating chart the numbers they need.

Do we need paper RSVPs at all?

No. Fully digital RSVP is now common. Older guests appreciate a phone number as an alternative on the details card.

How do we word a postponement?

Short and warm: Our plans have changed, but our promise has not. New date, same place, details to follow.

What goes on the details card?

Website, accommodation, transport, dress code, and adults-only wording if needed. The invitation stays clean; the details card carries the logistics.
